The Hannover District Heating Research Institute was founded in 1980 with the aim to specialise in district heat based on scientific research. The Institute was promoted by the Lower Saxony Government. The Institute has 70 registered members from industry, suppliers and associations, who are specially interested in the development of district heating.

The purpose of the Fernwärme-Forschungsinstitut is to promote technology and science in the field of district heating whereby emphasis is given to scientific research and quality control of plants. Basis research and quality control, certification tests, systems tests and practical field tests, as well as advisory services and expertise are our main concern in order to secure the ecological and economical usage of the district heating for the future. Impartiality towards our customers and third parties is very important. |

The Fernwärme-Forschungsinstitut is engaged in German and European Advisory Committees for Standards. The experience from daily practice can be transferred towards the development of general standards. Recognised as examining laboratory the Fernwärme-Forschungsinstitut works independently from interests of manufacturers. |

Continuous Research ...
The Fernwärme-Forschungsinstitut is involved in research on several projects including finding out how far preinsulated medium pipes may be suitable for usage in the field of district heating. The research is being carried out on systems which are available already, but also proptotypes can be examined. Apart from functional and stress tests the Fernwärme-Forschungsinstitut is trying to find means and ways of improving the systems, whereby great importance is given to cost saving.
